  • About B4RN

The story of B4RN so far - For the Community - By the Community

Broadband for the Rural North Ltd or 'B4RN' is a professionally designed fibre optic broadband network, registered as a non-profit community benefit society, and run by a dedicated local team with the support of landowners and volunteers. B4RN offers 1,000Mbps FTTH broadband to every property boundary in our coverage areas, costing households only £30 per month

Broadband for the Rural North Ltd or ‘B4RN’ was launched in December 2011 by a local volunteer group led by industry expert Barry Forde. Registered in Melling as a community benefit society with the FSA (under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965), it can never be bought by a commercial operator and its profits can only be distributed to the community. Each investor in B4RN £1 shares is a shareholder with one vote

Who will be doing all this B4RN Kirkby Lonsdale work?

A group of local Kirkby Lonsdale volunteers will work together with residents to plan a B4RN Gigabit fibre optic broadband network to every property boundary (or as close as we can) in our town. We think it is the right thing to do

B4RN is VERY FAST - 1,000 Mbps Upload and Download - plus a Ping (bounce back signal) of just 1 or 2 ms

A B4RN Kirkby Lonsdale project will help our community have 21st-century fibre optic communications direct to each home or business, so that we are 'future-proofed' for all expected Internet, television and media streaming needs - domestic and business

Importantly you will never need to worry about your broadband capability for latest generation TV systems (4K or later on in 8K), TV and game streaming, latest generation fast PCs or Macs, Voice over Internet (VoIP) telephones and more - all through direct Ethernet cable connection or Homeplugs within the home. WIFI also is fully catered for - you will have enough WIFI bandwidth for all your latest mobile devices, even if you are a large family using many mobile devices. B4RN can be used with all your current in-home networking (Ethernet or WIFI), plus it is ideal for use with new generation MESH WIFI systems such as those from Netgear, Linksys, BT, Tenda and Ubiquiti

What has happened so far - what will happen in future?

We began preliminary communications in June/July 2018, and we hope to launch a fully active project this winter, after undertaking route planning and project costing with B4RN experts. This route plan and project investment data will be presented to Kirkby Lonsdale residents for approval plus their backing at a public meeting at the Lunesdale Hall early in 2019. We hope to finish the project by end 2020

BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP TO DO THIS NOW...

B4RN Community Projects are just that - they need to involve many in our town community in one way or another...

We need VOLUNTEERS to helps us take a theoretical route and project material plan and turn it into reality. If we don't have VOLUNTEERS to form planning, wayleaves, digging and duct installation teams, then no Kirkby Lonsdale B4RN project will be done

If YOU want B4RN Gigabit Fibre Optic Broadband in Kirkby Lonsdale - we need to work together to do this

Not everything is about digging - but there will be quite a bit of that. Anyone and everyone can offer to do different tasks. All ages and all skills are welcome. We doubt that we have many fully trained fibre optic networking experts living in Kirkby Lonsdale BUT some of you will learn a lot about B4RN community project methods and you will enjoy it. The 'B4RN Bug' bites for many people. As other communities from Caton to Dent, from Silverdale to Barbon, from Leck to New Hutton and many more places in between (plus the several 'B4RN-babies' further afield in the UK) - they have all decided to 'do it themselves' and gained a lot of satisfaction, new friendships and a stronger community spirit by doing so

  • B4RN Kirkby Lonsdale - Latest News

    B4RN Kirkby Lonsdale - Project Start June/July 2018

Kirkby Lonsdale has been surrounded by B4RN Gigabit fibre enabled villages/hamlets for some time including Hutton Roof, High Biggins, Cowan Bridge, Leck, Whittington, Tunstall, Melling, Hornby, Barbon, Middleton, Casterton, Mansergh, Kearstwick and Killington, all enjoying lower monthly costs and broadband performance up to 60 times the UK average of 16.51 Mbps *

While towns are trickier to do than rural villages, due to the amount of tarmac, concrete and potential road crossings needed, Ingleton is well advanced on its own B4RN town project and Sedbergh is starting on its own planning for B4RN. Kirkby Lonsdale is very lucky as we already have our own B4RN Green Cabinet (the master fibre optic hub or switch) installed at QES, to serve the school initially. This same B4RN 'hub' is easily internally expandable to cater for the needs of all properties in Kirkby Lonsdale (estimated at around 650 properties)

A small group of volunteers is now forming in July/August/September 2018 to do initial Feasibility, Route Planning and Project Costing, ahead of a Public Launch Meeting which will be held at the Lunesdale Hall hopefully early in 2019 (date to be advised)
